American Counseling Assn.
A contemporary approach to substance abuse and addiction counseling; a counselor's guide to application and understanding.
Embracing a holistic approach, Brooks and McHenry, both associate professors of counseling at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, provide a basic understanding of the nature of substance abuse and addiction, its progression, and clinical interventions in school, community, and mental health agency settings. Major themes are relapse prevention, developmental issues, spirituality, and ecological aspects of the biopsychosocial framework, specifically a multicultural community counseling approach based on the ecological model of Bronfenbrenner. After a review of diversity issues and types of drugs, chapters cover assessment and diagnosis, family and addiction, grief and loss, and group counseling. Final chapters look at training, certification, and ethics, and the importance of counselor self-care. Chapter summaries, exploration questions, and activities are included.
