Krause's food & nutrition therapy, 12th ed.
The profession's changed focus from "diet therapy" to nutrition therapy is reflected in the changed title of this 12th-edition classic, which was first published in 1952, and has endured as an authoritative reference and textbook. Included in the updates, of course, are the newest recommendations for dietary intake, as well as new "clinical scenarios" features, new chapters on nutrition therapy (for psychiatric conditions and for developmental disabilities), updated references and tools, and electronic ancillaries. Coverage begins with the physiological and anatomical basics and continues with attention to each phase of the life cycle, assessment, health and fitness, and medical nutrition therapy for various disorders. Editor Mahan is affiliated with the U. of Washington; Escott-Stump, with East Carolina U. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Massachusetts General Hospital comprehensive clinical psychiatry. (online+print)
Having gone from conception to bookshelves in less than two years, this new comprehensive reference evidently reflects not only the expertise of contributors from Massachusetts General Hospital but also their ability to meet deadlines. After five chapters on the doctor- patient relationship, the psychiatric interview, laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, treatment adherence, and human development, subsequent chapters (for a total of 93) cover the gamut of relevant subjects, including various types of non-psychiatric disorders (delirium, dementia, mental retardation, those due to a general medical cognition, and sleep disorders), as well as psychiatric disorders and their treatment, epidemiology, genetics, various populations and care settings, neuropsychiatry, and law. Three final chapters address coping with the rigors of psychiatric practice, the media, and international psychiatry in the 21st century. The presentation is clear and attractive, but for those who prefer not to lift a nine-pound book, the contents are also online (access included with purchase of the print version). Musculoskeletal imaging; case review, 2d ed.
While the second edition of Yu's (radiology, Ohio State U. Medical School, Columbus) resource text retains 90 subjects from the first edition considered to be essential core material in orthopedic radiology, 80% of the material in the revised edition is new — 110 entirely new topics, some 600 new board-type questions, and 200-plus new references. In addition, all of the b&w images have been replaced with new ones giving the text an updated, fresh look. Also included are musculoskeletal ultrasound images, which were lacking in the first edition, and the text has been brought in line with others in the Case Review series to allow referral to the third edition of The Requisites: Musculoskeletal Imaging by Manester, May, and Disler. Suitable for use by radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and trainees of all levels, as a tool for board examination review or for sharpening interpretive skills. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Pearson's thoracic & esophageal surgery, 3d ed.; 2v.
Earlier editions published in 1995 and 2002 were titled Esophageal surgery. The third edition honors original lead editor F. Griffith Pearson (U. of Toronto) with his name at the head of the title. He's passed responsibilities on to Patterson (Washington U. School of Medicine) and co-editors Cooper (U. of Pennsylvania), Deslauriers (Laval U., Canada), Lerut (Catholic University Leuven, Belgium), Luketich (U. of Pittsburgh), and Rice (Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine). Fortunately for users, this reference is an online-plus- print package, because the two-volume print version is not for the weak of limb; it weighs close to 20 pounds, with the first (heavier) volume devoted to thoracic surgery and the second, to esophageal. Coverage is comprehensive and authoritative. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Raj's practical management of pain, 4th ed.
P. Prithvi Raj initiated and edited the first edition in 1986, with the goal of providing a resource for someone with one year to learn everything about pain management; the field was young and in dire need of a core reference. In his preface to this fourth edition he comments on the challenges of the field with regard to reimbursement and government regulatory agencies, and he emphasizes the need for standardized pain management curriculum. Raj's name ascends to the title with this edition, and he has passed lead editorial responsibilities to Benzon (Northwestern Memorial Hospital), who has recruited four co-editors: Rathmell (Massachusetts General Hospital), Wu (Johns Hopkins U.), Turk (U. of Washington), and Argoff (Albany Medical Center). The team represents the specialties of anesthesiology, psychology, and neurology, and contributors from these specialties as well as physical medicine and rehabilitation, present a total of seventy-two chapters. Surgical techniques of the shoulder, elbow, and knee in sports medicine. (DVD included)
The shoulder and rotator cuff are the subject of 30 of the 48 contributed chapters; the elbow, 10, and the knee, 8. These joints, the ones most commonly treated in the "sports medicine" population, are covered comprehensively; and the idea behind this text is to be absolutely thorough within this limited scope so as not to be of overwhelming size. The text is abundantly illustrated, and supplementary videos are included on a DVD. Editors Cole (Rush U. Medical Center) and Sekiya (U. of Michigan) and associate editors Gomoll (Brigham and Women's Hospital) and Rihn (Thomas Jefferson U. Hospital) have brought together the work of some 70 contributors, many of whom are the developers and popularizers of the procedures they describe. Offering exactly what's needed before entering the operating room, the chapters conform to a template: introduction, thumbnail of most important considerations, graphically supported explicit description of the procedure, and a table of results. Theory and practice of histological techniques.
The sixth edition of this textbook, which follows the original by 30 years, emphasizes how the field of histological research has advanced recently, specifically in terms of molecular pathology, genetic testing, laser capture, in situ hybridization and the emergence of immunohistochemistry. Editors Bancroft and Gamble (both are pathologists retired, respectively, from Queen's Medical Centre, UK, and from Kasier Permanente, California) have assembled 32 contributed chapters and have made the necessary decisions about including old vs. new technologies — new technologists need a grounding in the older methods, and yet the new technologies must not be neglected — to create a balanced, comprehensive reference/text.
