AIDS therapy, 3d ed., multimedia e-dition.
Written by an international team of specialists (though the majority are in the US), the 82 chapters of this text offer a thorough and up-to-date discussion of the drugs used to treat HIV. Three introductory chapters are devoted to diagnosis and primary care of HIV-infected patients. The chapters on therapies are divided into the broad topics of antiretroviral, immune-based, complementary and alternative therapies; management in special clinical settings; opportunistic processes — this includes 24 chapters on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illnesses that include hepatitis, international parasitic infections, and herpes — approaches to specific syndromes, and drug administration and interactions. A separate chapter is provided on HIV/AIDS-related internet resources. The editors acknowledge that the management discussed focuses on developed nations, but have added a chapter on the differences in patient populations in developing countries (and hold out hope that soon management parameters will be homogenous worldwide). The volume includes access to a related website, which is updated with new clinical developments. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Cytopathologic diagnosis of serous fluids.
Following an introduction to the cell biology and pathology of fluids from serous cavity linings and cavity effusions, washings, and other techniques for assessment of malignant vs. benign cells (e.g., Pap smears), Shidham (Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee) and Atkinson (U. of Kansas School of Medicine) and other contributors discuss proper specimen handling and the latest diagnostic interpretation approaches. They also treat reactive conditions whose mesothelial cell features may mimic carcinoma (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis). The text for students learning about cytopathologic interpretation/reference for pathologists and cythotechnologists includes algorithms, color illustrations and appendices on the collection and processing of effusion fluids for cytopathologic evaluation, and the immunocytochemistry of effusions and immunomarkers commonly used in cytology smears. Diagnostic parasitology for veterinary technicians, 3d ed.
Hendrix (pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University) and Robinson, CVT, provide a text for use in parasitology classes in veterinary technology education, covering the most commonly encountered internal and external parasites of both domesticated and lab animals. The text begins with a chapter detailing the language of parasitology. As in the last edition, each succeeding chapter describes a different parasite group in detail, with special emphasis placed on morphology, uniqueness of the life cycle, and important parasites within the group. For this third edition, treatments and preventive measures have been added to the sections on the major parasites, and a new chapter with a quick reference to the most common parasites has been added, containing color photos of the most common parasite ova seen in diagnostic tests. B&w photos from the previous edition have been replaced with color photos to assist in the demonstration of key features needed for identification. A glossary is also new to this edition. Electrotherapy; evidence-based practice, 12th ed.
As the new editor of the classic textbook formerly known as Clayton's Electrotherapy (1948-2002 editions), Watson (physiotherapy, U. of Hertfordshire, UK) counters the view that evidence is lacking for the efficacy of electrical stimulation in pain reduction, tissue repair, and muscle re-training. With ample illustrations, he introduces the concepts, theories, clinical applications, research, and guidelines on such adjunctive therapies, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) perhaps being the best-known. International contributors to 21 chapters discuss considerations for specific methods and medical conditions. The book offers a sample form for recording unexpected effects and online access to supplementary resources. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
