Biostatistics; the bare essentials, 3d ed. (CD-ROM included)

Norman, Geoffrey R. and David L. Streiner.
B.C. Decker, ©2008    393 p.    $49.00    QH323
978-1-55009-347-6

Norman (clinical epidemiology and biostatistics, McMaster University, Canada) and Streiner (psychiatry, University of Toronto, Canada) believe that "having the word 'statistics' in the same sentence as 'funny,' 'irreverent,' and 'possibly obscene' doesn't constitute an oxymoron." Their book/CD-ROM text, written especially for those in allied health fields, is peppered with humorous margin note asides, and free of math, calculations, and jargon. Chapters are in sections on the nature of data and statistics, analysis of variance, regression and correlation, and nonparametric statistics. This third edition contains new material on growth curve analysis, testing for equivalence and noninferiority, and getting started with SPSS. There is also more material on confidence intervals and indication of effect size. Chapter exercises, answers, and a glossary are included, along with chapter-ending "C.R.A.P. detector" exercises demonstrating how to spot misleading statistics. The CD-ROM contains two video lectures by the authors. The readership for the text includes physicians, nurses, administrators, psychologists, social workers, and anyone else who needs to understand medical research literature.
