Linking affect to action; critical contributions of the orbitofrontal cortex.

Ed. by Geoffrey Schoenbaum et al. (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences; v.1121)
Blackwell Publishing, ©2007    692 p.    $145.00    QP383
978-1-57331-683-5

It turns out that a number of bio-medical specialties have been treating the orbitofrontal cortex subdivision of the brain's prefrontal cortex as their territory, with no clue that others were doing the same. The March 2007 Academy conference in New York City, served rather as a gathering of lovers to trade stories. Papers of about 20 pages each report recent laboratory research into such aspects as cross-species comparison, chemosensory function, revealing the orbitofrontal cortex through the amygdala and striatum, mental health and aging, and addiction. Abstracts of posters are also presented. The quality of the illustrations is high for a conference volume. There is no subject index. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Manual of surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Ed. by Hauw T. Sie et al.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2008    256 p.    $99.95    RC685
978-1-4051-4032-4

In recent years, a myriad of surgical protocols have been developed to manage atrial fibrillation, increasing the confusion over which are the most effective approaches. The book presents a multidisciplinary, international team of authorities who have reviewed the evidence in order to establish which surgical approaches should be used under which circumstances. Divided into five parts, the book not only explores surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, it also offers an understanding of underlying causes. Sections cover anatomy, pathophysiology, and the electrophysiologic basis of atrial fibrillation; the surgical approach; modifications of the Cox-maze; use of alternative surgical patterns; the invasive cardiologist approach; and perioperative complications, reporting results, and statistical analysis. The art program features color and b&w cadaver photos, medical images, and illustrations. Sie is affiliated with the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Isala Klinieken, The Netherlands. Mechanisms in transcriptional regulation.

Courey, Albert J.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2008    231 p.    $84.95    QH450
978-1-4051-0370-1

Courey (biochemistry, U. of California-Los Angeles) presents material he uses for a course in eukaryotic transcription for graduate and upper-division undergraduate students in the molecular life sciences, and incorporates basic ideas taught in a similar course on prokaryotes. Rather than pretending that he can fit a comprehensive account of genetic transcription into a slender paperback, he focuses on a few new topics such as the basal transcriptional machinery, mechanisms of activation, and the role of chromatin. His own research is on fruit flies, so many of his examples are drosophilic. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Mental health and social space; towards inclusionary geographies?.

Parr, Hester. (RGS-IBG book series)
Blackwell Publishing, ©2008    211 p.    $39.95    RC439
978-1-4051-6892-2

In the late 20th century, the wealthy elite in the West stopped supporting mental health facilities, now that their own insane were regularly being elected to high office. People with severe and enduring mental health problems were turned into the streets, a process called community care. But they have vanished from the media over the years, and Parr (human geography, U. of Dundee, Scotland) wonders what has become of them. She takes readers on a journey through different kinds of environments and communities, some of which purport to facilitate the empowerment and integration of this consistently marginalized group. Molecular mechanisms and models of aging; proceedings.

Int'l Association of Biomedical Gerontology. International Congress (12th: 2007: Spetsai Island, Greece) Ed. by Efstahios S. Gonos et al. (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences; v.1119)
Blackwell Publishing, ©2007    312 p.    $145.00    QP86
978-1-57331-686-6

While aging is inevitable, it is also the result of complex genetic factors interacting with a variety of stochastic changes over time. Therefore the process may be inevitable but is also an adaptive process modulated by genetics and environment. These papers from the May 2007 Congress include an overview of clonal attenuation of somatic cells in aging mammals. Contributors address cell signaling and replicative sequences (including how human diploid fiberblasts exposed to hypoxia expands proliferative life spans); biomarkers of aging (including age spots and the micro-inflammatory model of skin aging); DNA repair and aging (including oxidating DNA damage during senescence as the first step toward carcinogenesis); free radicals, oxidative stress, proteolysis, and proteins maintenance (including such topics as lipofuscin), intervention (including stress-mediated hermetic modulation of aging); molecular links between aging and cancer, age-related diseases, model organisms; and evolutionary and epidemiological aspects of aging. Turning a town around; a pro-active approach to urban design.

Hall, Tony.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2007    187 p.    $94.99    TD160
978-1-4051-7023-9

Hall (Griffith University, Australia) helps urban planners, developers, and elected officials understand and manage urban design within the urban planning process. He sets out a proactive approach to building urban design into the local planning process, based on the actual experience of redesigning the built form and urban life of one UK town, Chelmsford. Hall was formerly an elected member of the Chelmsford Borough Council in the UK for six years, and he draws on his professional and political experience to explain how to incorporate design principles into policy, make design briefing effective, and prepare for successful negotiation. The first part of the book deals with the nature of the recommended proactive approach, with chapters on integrating urban design with broader spatial policy, the preparation of physically prescriptive guides and masters, and proactive negotiation. The second part of the book describes how the proactive approach evolved at Chelmsford and gives examples of what was achieved. Numerous b&w and color photos and plans are included.
