Electronic health records; a guide for clinicians and administrators, 2d ed.
The second edition of this guide for electronic health records was prompted by the contributions of the Department of Health and Human Services to this field in 2003. Editor Carter (Morehouse School of Medicine) assembled a large number of contributors in the medical industry to outline the purpose of an electronic health records (EHR) system for a hospital or medical facility environment. Emphasis is placed on how to evaluate, purchase and use such a system, and how it can benefit the management of such facilities on a legal and technological level. This guide is aimed at anyone who wishes to implement such a system into a business model. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Medical decision making.
This professional reference and classroom text, a standard for the past two decades, continues to provide basic decision-making algorithms and techniques that work with classic or new protocols. The team of practitioner-authors addresses the basic questions behind decision-making, including the interpretation of new diagnostic information and selection of the most appropriate tests, closely define differential diagnosis, and describe probability as a way of quantifying uncertainty and Bayes's Theorem as a means of processing new information. They show how to measure the accuracy of clinical data, perform expected value decision making, measure the outcome of care, make decisions when the outcomes have several dimensions, select and interpret diagnostic tests, analyze bedside decisions, and perform cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis. This works as both a professional reference and classroom text. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
The quotable Osler, deluxe ed.
The deluxe edition reprints the revised paperbound edition (2008); but it is leatherbound and printed on elegant paper, and it includes more illustrations. Sir William Osler (1849-1919) has been deemed the greatest physician of the twentieth century. Silverman, T. Jock Murray and Charles S. Bryan have gathered a great many aphorisms that fully support that reputation. After the impressive biography, they've arranged the work under such headings as: art & practice of medicine; the profession; diagnosis; education; and faith, religion...death. Keywords & synonyms: McGill University, Johns Hopkins, Principles and Practice of Medicine, Regius Chair Oxford University, Radcliffe Infirmary, baronetcy. An inspiring view of a great man. Teaching in your office; a guide to instructing medical students and residents, 2d ed.
Alguire (American College of Physicians, Philadelphia), DeWitt (School of Rural Health, Shepparton, Australia), Pinsky (U. of Washington, Seattle), and Ferenchick (Michigan State U., East Lansing) present an updated text for physicians interested in improving their skills in office-based teaching while maintaining the efficiency of their practice. The second edition is enriched with additional references, inclusion of information on the new core clinical competencies, more innovative teaching tips, a new chapter on teaching procedural skills, and a greatly expanded chapter on learner feedback and evaluation. The appendices have been reorganized to be more accessible and intuitive, and the text is now supplemented by an online collection of additional education tools, faculty development resources, and an electronic teaching encounter form for mobile devices or personal computers for recording and remembering interactions with learners.
