Comprehensive pediatric hospital medicine.

Ed. by Lisa B. Zaoutis and Vincent W. Chiang.
Elsevier Mosby, ©2007    1349 p.    $139.00    RJ45

General issues pertinent to hospitalists are covered in 24 initial chapters, with sections on caring for the patient, hospitalist service administration, ethics, legal issues, and quality of care. Much of the text is devoted to the overarching topics of common presenting signs and symptoms and systems approach — with multi-chapter sections included on infectious diseases, pulmonology, cardiology, dermatology, child abuse, etc. A final section presents 18 chapters on procedures. As is the norm for this publisher, the volume is well designed, with clear organization, and a wealth of useful tables, photos, diagrams, and additional resources. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Core curriculum for primary care pediatric nurse practitioners.

Ed. by Nancy A. Ryan-Wenger.
Elsevier Mosby, ©2007    1058 p.    $66.95    RJ245
978-0-323-02756-4

This work can serve as a guide for the development of pediatric nurse practitioner curricula and can function as a means of monitoring and evaluating the comprehensiveness of an educational program for both pediatric and family nurse practitioner specialties. Ryan-Wenger (nursing, The Ohio State University) presents a structured outline for the development of pediatric nurse practitioner curricula, covering the role of the pediatric nurse practitioner, physical assessment, health assessment, health promotion, evaluation of common signs and symptoms, and management of common acute illness and chronic physical and mental conditions. The outline format serves as a framework for building a curriculum and as a review guide for students preparing for certification exams. Some areas discussed here that are not often covered in other books include emergencies in primary pediatrics, pain management, and complementary, alternative, and nonpharmacologic treatments. Extended-matching questions for finals, 2d ed.

Alcolado, John C. and M. Afzal Mir.
Churchill Livingstone, ©2007    414 p.    $39.95    R834
978-0-443-10376-6

All questions in this study guide are in the standard extended matching format. Each question is set around a theme that may be a symptom, sign, investigation, diagnosis, or management decision. This is followed by a lead-in statement asking the examinee to select an appropriate answer from a list of options. The questions cover 150 key themes in medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry. Each themed question contains a list of 10 options from which to choose answers to five clinical scenarios. Both long and relatively short scenarios are included. The questions have been broadly divided into body systems, but about one-third of the questions relate to important signs and symptoms. The book is for undergraduate and postgraduate students preparing for exams. Alcolado is a reader in medicine at the University of Cardiff, UK. Mir is affiliated with University Hospital of Wales. Fundamentals of musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Jacobson, Jon A.
Elsevier Saunders, ©2007    345 p.    $79.00    RC925
978-1-4160-3593-0

Jacobson (radiology, University of Michigan) details the steps for performing an ultrasound exam for each joint in the body with normal sonographic anatomy. Techniques are illustrated with b&w photos, sonographic images, and detailed, high-quality b&w anatomical drawings on every page. With this foundation in normal sonographic anatomy, subtle pathologic processes can then be recognized. Chapters are divided into sections on peripheral joints and adjacent structures. Within each joint chapter, there is a discussion of essential anatomy, ultrasound technique, and normal sonographic anatomy, followed by pathologic examples. Because some pathologies are not specific to one joint or anatomical structure, such as infection and foreign bodies, these topics are covered in a chapter on basic pathology concepts. An introductory chapter covers equipment, basic scanning and interventional techniques, basic anatomy, sonographic artifacts, and other applications such as color and power Doppler. Four chapters discuss the effect of poison in special populations, and a separate section is devoted to terrorism, including chemical agents and radiation.
