Saunders manual of small animal practice, 3d ed.

Ed. by Stephen J. Birchard and Robert G. Sherding.
Elsevier Saunders, ©2006    2008 p.    $155.00    SF981
978-0-7216-0422-0

Birchard and Sherding, both affiliated with the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University, cover commonly encountered disorders seen in small animal practice in this reference for practicing veterinarians and veterinary students. Material is presented in semi-outline format, with numerous key points, tables, bulleted lists, and two-color line drawings of procedures and surgical techniques. Coverage concentrates on clinical treatment of common conditions, with no material on the pathophysiology of disease, rare conditions, or infrequently used diagnostic and treatment methods. This third edition contains new chapters on pain management, vaccination, disorders of the claw, post-operative rehabilitation, and syncope. Other new areas covered include emerging infectious diseases and current imaging techniques. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Sleisenger and Fordtran's gastrointestinal and liver disease; pathophysiology, diagnosis, management, 8th ed; 2v.

Ed. by Mark Feldman et al.
Elsevier Saunders, ©2006    1540 p.    $279.00    RC801
978-1-4160-0245-1

Now in its eighth edition (the seventh was published in 2002; the first was published in 1973), this two-volume set continues as a state-of-the-art, definitive reference that holds to high editorial standards for both content and readability. The organization remains essentially the same, but one-third of the contributing authors are new to this edition, thus keeping the content current and authoritative. Virtually all endoscopic and histologic figures are now in color and are integrated with the text; and diagrams and algorithms have been redrawn for uniformity and visual appeal. Dr. Sleisenger ceded the principal editor's seat for this edition, but continues as consulting editor; the brunt of the editorial work fell to Mark Feldman, Lawrence S. Friedman, and Lawrence J. Brandt (respectively: Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, among other affiliations). (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Textbook of natural medicine, 3d ed.; 2v.

Ed. by Joseph E. Pizzorno and Michael T. Murray.
Churchill Livingstone, ©2006    2201 p.    $229.00    RZ440
978-0-443-07300-7

This update of the 1999 and 1993 editions reflects the growing interest in and research support for what is known as alternative and complementary medicine (CAM), integrative medicine, holistic or natural medicine. Naturopathic physicians associated with Bastyr U. in Kenmore, Washington, introduce this virtual encyclopedia with contributions on many aspects of CAM. V.1 covers: its theoretical foundations, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic modalities, syndromes and special topics (some considered controversial in allopathic medicine, e.g., a major role for food allergies in disease), and the pharmacology of herbs and other natural remedies. V.2 treats specific health problems and includes appended health questionnaires, patient guidelines, and nutrition information. The weighty work is lightly illustrated. Pizzorno (president emeritus, Bastyr) heads SaluGenecists, Inc., Seattle. Murray teaches at Bastyr. Contributors hold degrees in alternative medicine modalities, JDs, PhDs, and even MDs.
