Cardiovascular physiology, 9th ed.
This resource for medical students, graduate students, and cardiovascular fellows provides an accessible introduction to the physiology of the cardiovascular system. Twelve chapters describe the individual parts of the system, while a concluding chapter explains how they all work together. Case histories with multiple-choice questions illustrate the clinical relevance of the material. The text is accompanied by electron micrographs and line drawings. Levy is Professor Emeritus of Physiology at Case Western Reserve U., and Pappano is affiliated with the U. of Connecticut's Calhoun Cardiology Center. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Clinical gynecology.
This resource for ob/gyn physicians, nurses, and other health professionals offers quick reference to evidence-based, clinically focused information on the full range of gynecologic health issues. Clinical hematology. (CD-ROM included)
With a commitment to making this new reference relevant to modern practices, that is, to avoid some tradition-bound conventions that put blinders on practitioners or cause hematology texts to go on for miles, the editors made some conscious choices with regard to organization, clarity of writing, and use of graphics. They sought to avoid overloading the text with primers in biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology (and hundreds of references); and they took into account that access to digital information these days precludes the necessity for textbooks to be encyclopedias, allowing for a focus on distillation of professional experience and discussion of clinical evidence. The graphics were prepared with special consideration for their power to communicate information, often in ways that are superior to text. The included CD-ROM offers the opportunity to use the graphics for teaching purposes, including education of patients. Editors Neal S. Young, Stanton L. Gerson, and Katherine A. High are affiliated, respectively, with national Institutes of Health, Case Western Reserve U., and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Clinical sports medicine.
Organized by body part, such as the shoulder or knee, the 72 contributions in this clinical reference outline procedures for the physical examination and evaluation of the injured athlete. Each chapter reviews clinical features, relevant anatomy, treatment options, surgery, rehabilitation, criteria for return to sports, and results and outcomes, and potential complications. Topics include scapulothoracic disorders, pediatric elbow, tendon ruptures, carpal fractures, overuse injuries, and ankle sprains. The opening chapters discuss the role of the team physician, cardiac problems, medications and supplements, musculoskeletal concerns of the female athlete, and classification of head injuries. One thousand plus color photographs and arthroscopic images are provided. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Common medical diagnoses; an algorithmic approach, 4th ed.
Using an intensely visual approach, Healy and Jacobson (both clinical medicine, UCLA School of Medicine) provide new algorithms on heart failure and diagnostic testing along with updates to keep the content consistent with the most current clinical practice guidelines. The algorithms emphasize the most cost-effective options and the most common diagnoses and presents by system, including generalized, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastointestinal, renal, acid/base and electrolyte, hematologic, neurological, endocrine, skin and musculoskeletal disorders. Carefully annotated, the algorithms can also serve as study guides, in clinical practice, or as quick reference. The index also serves as a cross reference. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Endocrine pathology.
US and European pathologists offer a broad reference to diseases of the endocrine organs — the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands and the paraganglia. They discuss selected disorders in a format meant to allow quick cross-referencing and comparison. A major concern is how to the translate information from the microscope into knowledge that can guide clinicians and researchers in managing afflicted patients. Color photographs and micrographs grace nearly every page. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
