Construction site erosion and sediment controls.

Pitt, Robert et al.
DEStech Publications, Inc., ©2007    381 p.    $149.50    TA749
1-932078-38-X

The purpose of this book is to supplement state, regional, and local guidelines available on the use of construction site erosion and sediment controls. Pitt (urban water systems, University of Alabama) provides background on regulations and problems caused by construction site runoff, then offers guidance on control options and site planning issues, emphasizing an engineering approach. Regional rainfall and site hydrology, erosion mechanisms and controls, channel and slope stability, and temporary ponds and filter fabric barriers are then covered. A final chapter lists Internet sources and abstracts of selected references. Case studies, b&w field photos, data tables, and maps are included. The book contains chapter summaries and problems, and can be used as a text. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Structural health monitoring 2006; proceedings.

European Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring (3rd: 2006: Granada, Spain). Ed. by Alfredo Güemes.

These proceedings of the Third European Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring held at the Conference Centre in Granada, Spain, in July of 2006 includes four keynote presentations and 170 technical papers written by an international group of contributors. Papers discuss technology and activities related to damage detection and evaluation in engineering structures, signal processing, sensor development, analytical techniques, and experimental case studies. Other topics covered are monitoring of civil structures; aerospace, bridge, building, and civil engineering applications; the ARTIMA (Aircraft Reliability Through Intelligent Materials Applications) Project; guided waves; new developments; optimal sensor placement; piezoelectrics and elastic waves; rotating machinery; wireless sensors applications; and systems. Only an author index is provided. Güemes is a scholar in the field of aeronautics at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

The use of best management practices (BMP) in urban watersheds.

Ed. by Richard Field et al.
DEStech Publications, Inc., ©2006    268 p.    $89.50    TD657
1-932078-46-0

Joined by others in engineering and environmental sciences who are associated with the EPA, Field presents this publication, which is part of the EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory's strategic long-term research plan. It is aimed at those planning or designing an urban watershed management campaign in agencies, municipalities, watershed management groups, and other organizations. The report offers information on the most commonly used structural best management practice options, which have not been brought together before, as well as design considerations and guidelines for monitoring, selection, implementation, and associated costs. It focuses on structural best management practices, and discusses nonstructural practices briefly. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
