This heavy tome serves as a desk reference on all aspects of brain injury medicine for physiatrists, neurologists, psychiatrists, students, and other physicians. Zasler (physical medicine and rehabilitation, Virginia Commonwealth U. and U. of Virginia) et al. compile 66 chapters by an international group of authors, who cover the assessment, management, and rehabilitation of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Specifically, topics deal with the clinical continuum of care, natural history of TBI, rehabilitative care in the US and other countries, and training and research. Epidemiology, prevention, and public health issues are discussed, as well as the effects of trauma and recovery on the brain, pathophysiology, brain plasticity, and treatments affecting neural recovery. Technologies such as structural and functioning neuroimaging and electrophysiologic techniques are described. Prognosis and outcome is followed by sections on acute care, the care and treatment of specific populations such as older adults and children, and neurologic and neuromusculoskletal problems. Medical management issues dealing with nutrition, sexuality, reproduction, pain disorders, and other topics, are also detailed. The section on medicolegal issues can be useful to lawyers and advocates. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
