Popper's theory of science; an apologia.
García (philosophy, U. de Caldas and epistemology, U. de Manizales, Columbia) restrains himself to the cornerstones of philosopher of science Karl Popper's (1902-94) theory of science: its treatment of the problem of induction, and its notions of falsifiability, corroboration, and verisimilitude. These together, he says, provide science criteria for admitting or rejecting a theory and for selecting between competing theories, and explain the growth of scientific knowledge. He notes they also provide an alternative to logical positivism, just in case anyone still needs yet another one. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
