The book is meant to be an alternative to lengthier texts and to be paired with readings in college courses. It can also be used by general readers. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Care of the neurological patient.
Neurological issues trail only heart disease and cancer as responsible for the greatest number of patient admissions in the UK. Aimed at improving clinical nursing skills for nurses, this handbook focuses on care of ongoing neurological disorders. Written for UK nurses and students in a non-specialist setting, this offers a range of practical techniques, using case studies and examples and offering model care plans, and covers basic anatomy and physiology, nursing assessment, maintaining a safe environment, communicating, and helping patient breathing, eating and drinking, eliminating, washing and dressing, controlling body temperature, mobilizing, working and playing, expressing sexuality, and dying. It also includes the text of the National Service Framework for Long Term Conditions and Skill Competencies in Neurological Care. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Cellular and molecular mechanisms of drugs of abuse and neurotoxicity; cocaine, GHB, and substituted amphetamines.
This collection of 63 papers is derived from a satellite meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry Meeting and European Society for Neurochemistry held in Venice, Italy, in August 2005. In introducing these papers, Ali (Neurochemistry Laboratory, National Center for Toxicological Research, FDA) and Fornai (human morphology and applied biology, U. of Pisa, Italy) note the conference's goal to understand the cellular and molecular genetic mechanisms of commonly abused drugs that make them so compelling, and their similarities and differences in neurotoxicity. Findings from experimental studies are discussed for drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, nicotine, gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) — the "date rape" drug, and organic solvents. Images show brain effects. Lacks a subject index. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
