Black River Canal.
The 35 mile long Black River Canal, connecting the Erie Canal at Rome, NY with the Black River at Lyons Falls, was completed in 1855. The canal was notable because of its 109 locks and its rise and fall of 1079 feet. This book contains a couple of hundred archival photographs of the canal and related infrastructure, as well as of the economic activity encouraged by the canal, such as logging, barge building, and the like. Brief descriptions of each era precede the photos, which are accompanied by captions. There is no index. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
