A 46-page glossary of terms and tests is included. This second edition features new and updated material to reflect changes in the field over the past 10 years. The book will be used by professionals in medical writing, scientific publication, and evidence-based medicine, and by reviewers who prepare or evaluate biomedical research for publication, especially in peer-reviewed journals. For physicians, this volume combines information from the fields of internal medicine, gynecology, adolescent medicine, and other subspecialties in a discussion of menstrual disorders. Ehrenthal (internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology, Christiana Care Health Services, and medicine, Thomas Jefferson U.) et al. compile 11 chapters by internists and gynecologists from the US who discuss the assessment and management of these disorders, which are often not covered in detail. Focus is on the complaint and underlying problems and short and long-term health. Some evidence-based approaches are included. The book first reviews the normal menstrual cycle, then concentrates on common complaints, and medical issues involving polycystic ovary syndrome, bleeding disorders, women who have developmental disabilities, and chronic problems. The last chapter addresses procedural management of abnormal uterine bleeding. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
