American countercultures; an encyclopedia of nonconformists, alternative lifestyles, and radical ideas in U.S. history; 3v.
From environmental writer Edward Abbey, author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, which helped inspire the radical environmental group Earth First!, to the zoot-suiters, a youth counter-culture that emerged among predominately African American and Mexican American youths during the late 1930s, this three-volume encyclopedia contains some 500 entries describing a broad array of topics associated with religious, political, identity, artistic, and lifestyle countercultures across American history. In order to give a sense of the topical breadth of the encyclopedia, perhaps it is useful to list some of the headings in its topic finder: arts and artists; civil rights and social protest movements; communities, settlements, and neighborhoods; consumer goods and products; cultural/historical periods and events; drugs and drug culture; ideologies and theories; literature and literary figures; film, television, radio, and alternative media; music and musicians; pastimes, fads, and recreations; religious/spiritual movements and figures; and sociopolitical movements. Specific examples of entry topics, presented in no particular order, include the Harlem Renaissance, Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol, the Federal Arts Project, Charles Bukowski, R. Buckminster Fuller, the Catholic Worker Movement, the Industrial Workers of the World, Emma Goldman, the New Left, underground comics, the Burning Man Festival, the Sacco and Vanzetti case, the Ku Klux Klan, Jehovah's Witnesses, anarchism, The Catcher in the Rye, Easy Rider, rap music, and Johnny Cash. Entries are frequently cross-referenced and include brief guides to further reading. Also included are 26 documents, including writings by Emma Goldman, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Nader; political statements of the Black Panther Party and Students for a Democratic Society; song lyrics by Bob Dylan; and Harlem Renaissance poetry, to cite a few. A bibliography, filmography, and index are also included in the third volume. (Annotation ©2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Associations and the Chinese state; contested spaces.
Unger (Contemporary China Centre, Australian National U.) notes that the boom in associations in contemporary China — including scientific, business and trade associations, women's advocacy groups, and charities — has led some social scientists to posit that this trend reflects democratization and the growth of a civil society. In nine chapters, Australian and US scholars present differing views on the roles of such associations and their tolerance by state corporatism as lenses through which to appraise sociopolitical changes occurring in the country. Some of the chapters are based on The China Journal, formerly co-edited by Unger. (Annotation ©2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Cases in advertising management.
Designed to be incorporated into an undergraduate course in advertising management, this collection of case studies illustrates current trends in marketing such as digital media and integrated marketing communications. Kelley, an executive vice president of an advertising firm, joins with Jugenheimer, an independent marketing consultant, to produce case studies from well-known agencies that describe management strategies for global expansion, billing procedures, outsourcing and overall profitability. The authors have also intended this volume as a companion piece to their textbook, Advertising Management, which covers leadership topics in marketing firms such as ethics, human resources, strategic planning and budgeting. Georgia diary; a chronicle of war and political chaos in the post-Soviet Caucasus, expanded edition.
Japanese-born Goltz (Montana State U.-Bozeman) has been a political writer and academic in the US for most of his life. His account of his experience in the Republic of Georgia was first published in 2006, and this revision appends a new epilogue describing his return visit during the Russian-Georgian war of August 2008. He focuses mostly on the Shevardnadze period, and especially on the unnecessary and tragic disaster of the war in Abkhazia, which he says continues to haunt the country even now. The work is the final volume in his post-Soviet triptych on the Caucasus, the others covering Azerbaijan (1998) and Chechnya (2003). (Annotation ©2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Principles of knowledge management; theory, practices, and cases.
Approaching the field of knowledge management (KM) from a management perspective rather than a technical point of view, the authors combine their backgrounds in information systems and organizational behavior to address the knowledge component as well as the management aspects of KM. Part I reviews current concepts of KM and the process by which KM is diffused in organizations. Part II addresses the structure, attributes, and processes of the knowledge-based enterprise, with particular focus on the design and implementation of knowledge-management systems (KMS) in the public and private sectors. Part III takes on the issue of measuring the outcomes of KMS, and discusses the KM audit in light of recent legislation. The book concludes with eight original cases illustrating successful and unsuccessful approaches used by companies in the travel industry, the health care sector, and telecommunications. Chapter objectives, key point summaries, and discussion questions are included. The text can be used for undergraduate and graduate courses in KM and KMS, and can be used as a resource by students in business administration, communications, economics, and management of information systems. The authors teach at the Illinois Institute of Technology. (Annotation ©2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
