Algonquin Books
On the road to freedom; a guided tour of the civil rights trail.
From Washington D.C. to Memphis, Tennessee, Cobb takes readers on a journey through the civil rights movement, telling stories along the way that focus on the South and period of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Traveling by state, he describes specific locations in cities and towns and the stories behind them, relating how people affected change. He goes to places such as the US Capitol and National Mall, Howard U. and other colleges, historic buildings and churches, cemeteries, museums, libraries, and restaurants. Historical photos are incorporated throughout. Part of the book was previously published in AARP: The Magazine. Cobb, a writer for AllAfrica.com, originated the "Freedom School" proposal that became part of the 1964 Mississippi Summer Project. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
