World without walls; being human, being Tamil; essays in Tamil studies.
The 14 essays in this collection are selections from contributions to the 2008 annual Toronto Tamil studies conference, "Being Human; Being Tamil," and concern the multiple ways of being Tamil. The essays explore and explode what it means to be Tamil through recent and 16th-century Tamil literature, language, dance, the construction of gender, Indian caste and the Dalit movement, and the Tamil diaspora. The contributors include an international cast of social scientists and literary scholars interested in South and Southeast Asian people and literature, as well as a Tamil novelist. This book is not indexed, though the essays include citations and sometimes notes. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
