Narrative approaches in social work practice; a life span, culturally centered, strengths perspective.
Practitioners may be so focused on an aspect of a problem that they may not hear the client's attempt to frame it, and so, cannot help facilitate the narrative process and its utilization in making changes. Drawing on life span theory, social construction theory, cultural theory, and spirituality, Freeman (emerita, social welfare, U. of Kansas, Lawrence) discusses the principles and skills of narrative practice based on a "not knowing" attitude, i.e., one assuming that the client is the expert on their own narratives. Case examples illustrate this approach in social work practice with culturally-diverse individuals, families, and groups in traditional and nontraditional settings such as life writing courses.
