This is an English translation — with a few additional illustrations and minor changes — of a German work published in 2005. The author studied title engravings of 17th-century scientific publications, finding that beyond visualizing what is already well-known about the history of the period, the images yield interesting new insights. Faced with an overwhelming amount of material at the beginning of his research, he narrowed the focus to concentrate on the dispute over the Copernican system, and efforts to "legitimize new theories and disciplines during the 17th century." This is an elegantly produced volume and a substantial contribution of interest to historians of science, religion, and art. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
