Brake design and safety, 3d ed.

Limpert, Rudolf.
SAE International, ©2011    415 p.    $99.95    TL269
978-0-7680-3438-7

Retired now from a career as a consulting engineer on motor vehicle and traffic safety, Limpert provides a systems approach to designing safer brakes. He writes for automotive engineers; technical consultants; accident reconstruction experts; and lawyers involved with the design of brake systems, the analysis of brake systems, and product liability issues. No dates are cited for previous editions, but he has revised this third in light of comments he has received from readers. He also keeps up with the technology, but points out that for all the fancy electronic control systems now being used, the vehicle is still stopped by friction between the pad and rotor, and those must be designed well. SAE formed a group in 2010 to promote integrated vehicle health management (IVHM), which focuses on aircraft, mostly military aircraft. Here members of that group look at the development of maintenance and the role of IVHM, the business value of implementing it, basic principles, design tools and tool kits, integrating system-wide data to estimate the instantaneous health state, operations rooms, future directions and issues, and other topics.
