The storied ice; exploration, discovery, and adventure in Antarctica's Peninsula Region.
This work for general readers tells the story of various well-known and less-known explorers, whalers, expeditions, aviators, and scientists of Antarctica's Peninsula Region. Narratives include many quotes from the explorers' own accounts. The first chapter gives an overview of efforts at exploration before 1819; later chapters cover the discovery of Antarctica 1819-1821, through the Antarctic Treaty era after 1959. The book includes 100 b&w historical photos and illustrations and 30 maps, plus a timeline, a table of Antarctic firsts, and a glossary. Boothe has traveled widely in Antarctica.
