Queeda Mantle Walker, a former rodeo queen, was born in 1933 in the Yampa River Canyon of Colorado and lived a life close to nature until she graduated from the University of Colorado in 1954. This memoir of two generations on the Mantle family's ranch draws on the photos, notes, and correspondence of the author's mother Evelyn Fuller Mantle. Evelyn, a city girl from Syracuse, NY, was 19 years old when she married a cowboy in 1926 and started a family with him in an isolated area with no road, no electricity, no running water, no telephone, no doctor, and no neighbors for more than 40 miles by horseback. In spite of the hardships, Evelyn achieved her goal of educating all five of her children; three of them graduated from college. The book is illustrated with b&w historical family photos.
