Joseph Pilsudski (1867-1935) confronted both Hitler and Stalin in his political career. In WWI, he led the Polish Legion against Russia. In 1920, as the leader of the Polish state, he defeated Russia's Red Army. This book examines his life in the context of Polish and European history, with a 71-page history of Poland as a prelude to the biography, and offers insight on the causes of WWII and contemporary issues in Europe. The book sheds light on well-known aspects of Pilsudski's life as well as less-known episodes, including his youth. A timeline and many b&w historical photos, illustrations, and maps are included. Hetherington is a geologist. The book is distributed in the US by Small Press United. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
