The logos of Heraclitus; the first philosopher of the West on its most interesting term.
With 50 years of teaching and a long list of books behind her, Brann (St. John's College, Maryland) examines one the most mysterious of the ancient Greek philosophers. She thinks that the extant works attributed to Heraclitus represent a well-conceived collection of sayings rather than fragments of a lost narrative, and that his river of becoming instigated his antagonist Parmenides to propose his rival seamless sphere of being rather than vice-versa. Among her topics are the word logos, the discovery of Pythagoras, the Milesian predecessors, solvent fire, cosmic antagonisms, the flux, and the soul of Heraclitus. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc.
