Strategies for writing in the science classroom; grades 4-8.
This resource for elementary and middle school teachers offers a framework for including writing as part of the instructional plan in science to help students develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of science concepts. The methods can be used within any science instructional model. Strategies are given for writing to engage students before they begin a learning unit, note taking (including taking notes on videos), developing science vocabulary, listening and thinking in science, and extending learning. The strategies come with step-by-step directions and many include student examples. Some take only a few minutes and some require a whole class period or outside assignments. Numerous worksheets for students are included. The final chapter presents six instruments for evaluating student lab report, data analysis, and projects. Kopp is a teacher and author.
