Some of the nation's earliest collections and museums were at college and university campuses, notes Danilov, who formerly directed the museum management program, U. of Colorado, and the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, and has authored many books in the museum field. This volume presents 1,736 detailed profiles (60 percent more than in the first edition) of museums, galleries, libraries, planetariums, observatories, science centers, aquariums, botanical gardens, sculpture gardens, arboretums, herbariums, and other museum-like facilities located at 822 U.S. universities, colleges, and related organizations — some 10% of the nation's museums. Introductory chapters to the directory discuss the history of campus-based museums, trends and challenges; types of museums; governance, management, and programming; facilities; and reasons behind closures and new facilities. Supported by photographs; indices; an appendix of founding/opening dates; and a bibliography. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

This resource brings together evaluative, demographic, and comparative statistics from various sources, ranging from the Department of Education to the National Center for Education Statistics, for 5,838 public school districts in the US. Each state and its districts are profiled in the first section, with information on students, diploma recipients, high school drop-out rates, staff, student/staff ratios, current spending, and college entrance exam scores, as well as test scores from the National Assessment of Education Progress broken down by gender, race, ethnicity, and class size. The second section covers individual school districts arranged alphabetically by county, focusing on schools with 1,500 or more students, with contact information and data on grade span; district type; number and type of schools; number of teachers, librarians/media specialists, and guidance counselors; current spending; enrollment; drop-out and graduation rates; and diploma recipients. The final section lists average scores and proficiency levels for fourth grade reading and math and eighth grade reading, math, writing, and sciences, with national rankings by district. Indexes are by school district and city. Along with a new glossary, this edition has new data ranking information on federal, local, and state revenue and long-term debt. Grey House Pub., Inc., ©2011    884 p.    $149.00    F386

Drawing on official census information, government statistics, and other research, this work is based on content from the publisher's Profiles of America, with updated material and new chapters, to offer a complete portrait of all populated communities and counties in the state of Texas. The bulk of the book is a section of alphabetical profiles of 1,784 places and 254 counties. A comparative statistics section compares the state's 100 largest communities. The section on education gives information on schools, students, diplomas granted, educational dollars spent, and school district rankings in many areas. Another section reveals the ancestral and racial makeup of the state, ranking 217 ethnic categories in three ways: by total population, by percentage of the state's population, and by percentage of the population in places with populations of 10,000 or more. Separate sections are devoted to statistics and information on the Hispanic and Asian populations of the state, with statistics in 15 categories, such as age, home value, and languages spoken. There is also a section on climate and a section of color demographic and reference maps and charts. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
