Tolstoy in Riyadh; a story of a teacher and her muse.
In 1982, the author, an American English teacher, was offered a position teaching English to women at King Saud U. in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This memoir reflects on the experiences of her and her son as they spent a year in the country, mostly addressing issues of culture and education in the gender-segregated society. Tolstoy is brought in as a literary conceit in relation to how he might have viewed Saudi society. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
