Christian mentality; the entanglements of power, violence, and fear.
Retired in California as professor of early Christianity, Mack says that while Christian beliefs, churches, morals, and forms of piety are all well studied, the Christian worldview has not been analyzed. This lack of understanding — especially by Christians — about how Christians think has made it difficult to think clearly about the roles of religions, plural cultures, and socio-political issues that the world faces. In sections on mentalities, social issues, and critique he examines such topics as the Christian nation, the Christian myth and legacy, the entanglements of Christian mentality, parsing the entanglements, and rethinking mentalities. He has not indexed his treatise. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Language and education; learning and teaching in society.
Hasan taught stylistics, culture, semantic variation, and similar subjects at universities in England, America, and Australia before retiring from Macquarie University, in Australia, in 1994. Here she collects written versions of 11 talks that she delivered over half a century. Much changed over that period, she says, but three major concerns persisted: the need for educators to be aware of the identity of the learner; their need to understand why and in what ways language plays an active part in all the processes of learning and teaching wherever and however they take place; and the connections between language, culture, and the processes of education. Morphosyntactic alternations in English; functional and cognitive perspectives.
Linguists specializing in English explore the discourse-pragmatic semantic, morphological and syntactic factors involved in English morphosyntactic alternations within a wide range of contemporary theoretical approaches. One question they address is whether the notion of alternations, with a basic and derived member, is at all valid, or whether scholars should be considering some of the alternatives proposed. They begin by setting out theoretically oriented approaches to the issue, then look at specific alternations. There is no index. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
