Global leadership in transition; making the G20 more effective and responsive.
This volume collects 30 papers presented during the September 2010 symposium organized by the Korea Development Institute and the Brookings Institution to discuss transforming the G20 into a more inclusive and enduring forum for international economic cooperation. The contributors examine the history of the G8 and the G20, rebalancing the global economy, G20 financial regulatory reform, possible development programs, regional dynamics, public attitudes, and communication strategies. Haunting legacy; Vietnam and the American presidency from Ford to Obama.
Kalb (government, Harvard U.) and his daughter Deborah, a freelance writer and editor, show how the ignominious 1975 retreat from Vietnam has affected the military strategy of each subsequent presidential administration. Relying on extensive interviews along with research in presidential libraries and archives, they find comparisons ranging from the strategy of the Carter administration to pull the Soviet Union into a quagmire in Afghanistan to the Swift Boat campaign disparaging John Kerry's service in Vietnam.
