A buffet of sensory interventions; solutions for middle and high school students with Autism Spectrum disorders.
Noting that sensory-based interventions do not get much attention in the secondary setting, Culp, an occupational therapist specializing in pediatrics, provides special educators, parents, and therapists with strategies to help teens with autism spectrum disorders deal with sensory issues and learn self-advocacy skills. She explains the process of sensory integration; its assessment; interventions for each sensory system; ways to teach self-regulation and techniques to deal with stress, anxiety, and meltdowns; and how to integrate them into educational programming. She concludes with a case study and example schedules. There is no index. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Loving the Tasmanian Devil; reflections on marriage and Asperger syndrome.
This is a very personal book about the author's coming to grips with and journey of discovery about her husband's Asperger Syndrome. Maureen Bartlett is a high school teacher in rural New York and wife of Andy, a dairy-farmer, who has the syndrome. The book represents the culmination of a process that began when she started to write topical reflections about Andy (in the form of letters to him) in light of what she was teaching herself about Asperger's. The many chapters cover topics like sexuality, imperviousness to certain sorts of social cues, evolution, marriage, and other personal insights coupled with research. Andy writes an afterword in the form of a question and answer panel about his condition and the affect his wife's process and the book itself have had on him. This book is not indexed.
