Symbol & icon; Dionysius the Areopagite and the iconoclastic crisis.
Ivanovic (U. of Aarhus, Denmark) has written a succinct and clearly formulated description of the theology of the late-5th century thinker, listing his works, and summarizing his thought. He lays out the differences between Dionysius's Platonism and that of the later neo-Platonists. The remainder of the short text describes in precise language the philosophy behind the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy, with an eye to the role played by Dionysius's thought. Although Greek terms are included in the text, the work is accessible and of interest for the undergraduate classroom as well as for specialists. Pickwick is an imprint of Wipf & Stock Publishers.
