Haunted visions; spiritualism and American art.

Colbert, Charles.
U. of Pennsylvania Pr., ©2011    319 p.    $49.95    N6510
978-0-8122-4325-3

The introductory essay on the history and teaching of spiritualism explains the confluence of cultural factors that made Americans in the latter half of the 19th century look to other worldliness for sources of inspiration and strength. Interest in art arose in concurrence as artistic representations began to be viewed as a focus of spiritual representation. Colbert (art history, Portland State U., Oregon) offers a lively, in-depth investigation of the crossing influences of the spiritualist movements and art in America. Well-chosen illustrations (in b&w) help bring home the themes. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Hitler and America.

Fischer, Klaus P.
U. of Pennsylvania Pr., ©2011    356 p.    $29.95    DD247
978-0-8122-4338-3

On the one hand, Hitler belittled the US as a racially polluted "mongrel nation." On the other hand, he admired America's technological and industrial achievements, and more darkly, its immigration quotas, segregation laws, and eugenics movement. Fischer (history and philosophy, Allan Hancock College, Santa Maria, CA) examines the sources from which Hitler's drew his split image of America and the consequences of that view, in contrast to President Roosevelt's more realistic assessment of Hitler's Germany. The finely-crafted book includes extensive reference material. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

A life spent changing places.

Halprin, Lawrence. (Penn studies in landscape architecture)
U. of Pennsylvania Pr., ©2011    258 p.    $45.00    NA737
978-0-8122-4263-8

The title does not make clear that this is an autobiography. Halprin (1916-2009) completed the manuscript in the last years of his life. It is a charming and vigorous narrative of life and work illustrated with family photos, drawings made during all phases of his life, and photos of projects. Laurie Olin (landscape architecture, U. of Pennsylvania) provides a foreword summarizing highlights of the great landscape architect's career, contributions, and legacy — particularly his strong interest in a process of creation that reaches into the minds of many people. The book's format is horizontal (11x8.5) — elegantly designed in a manner that allows readers to walk through text and photos as if in the company of a highly creative and articulate friend.
