Sharing our pathways; native perspectives on education in Alaska.
This diverse collection of essays on Native American education addresses a variety of experiences from multi-perspectives. The authors and researchers, some with Native voices, others with outsider voices, offer insight into educational curricula that has incorporated indigenous cultural experiences, language, and other ways of knowing. The autonomy Native Americans seek to maintain separately from the United States government and not be assimilated into mainstream culture, is integral to preserving their traditional ways. This can be achieved through education by teaching traditional Native values and beliefs, along with national curricula. The essays give an in-depth understanding of who the Native American people are, how they see themselves, and provide awareness to policy makers that their children be able to carry on their treasured traditions.
