Indigenous Albuquerque.
Carpio (American Indian studies, Arizona State U.), a citizen of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, also Laguna and Isleta Pueblo, examines the history and culture of the so-called "urban Indian," focusing on the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a model. She explores realities of why Indians may choose to move to cities, and finds the realities and history of this phenomenon more complex and nuanced than generally understood. She finds that Indians in cities tend to maintain vital ties to their families on the reservation, even though the urban Indian experience is generally seen in opposition to that of the reservation Indian.
