The fleece and fiber sourcebook; more than 200 fibers from animal to spun yarn.
This is a splendid, highly visual presentation for spinners, knitters, weavers, textile professionals and enthusiasts, as well as those involved in the husbandry of the many animals represented — 200-plus breeds of sheep, goats, camelids, bison, horses, musk oxen, rabbits, and dogs. From these animals come the fibers, each of which is described in terms of the characteristics pertinent to their use (fleece weight, staple length, fiber diameters, lock characteristics, natural colors, dyeing, preparation and spinning tips, and knitting, crocheting, and weaving suitability). Each is also illustrated with photos of raw fiber, clean fiber, spun thread, and woven samples. The animals themselves are profiled with information about their history and distinctive characteristics. Authors Deborah Robson (a publisher with special interest in traditional ethnic knitting and spinning) and Carol Ekarius (a writer of books on livestock farming) have partnered to create a charming and informative reference — clearly a labor of love.
