The Alexander discipline; v.2: Long-term stability.

Alexander, R.G. "Wick".
Quintessence Pub. Co., ©2011    193 p.    $152.00    RK521
978-0-86715-468-9

In this second volume in a two-volume set, Alexander (orthodontics, Baylor College of Dentistry, U. of Texas Dental Branch, and New York U. Dental School) explains the concept of long-term stability in orthodontics, seeing the treatment goal as keeping the mandibular anterior teeth as close as possible to their original positions and building the rest of the occlusion around them. He identifies six guidelines for long-term stability — surrounding tissues, anterior torque control, skeletal control, transverse control, occlusion, and soft tissue profile and smile — with discussion of research evidence, mechanical techniques, exceptions, special considerations, factors related to relapse, and cases. Handbook of cephalometric superimposition.

This book is dedicated to Arne Björk (1911-1996), an orthodontist born in Sweden who spent most of his career in Denmark. He was influential in conducting longitudinal studies of human postnatal facial growth that eventually led to development of a structural method of superimposition. This book comprises a thorough description of the method and its development as well as a manual for applying the method and interpreting results. This two-dimensional method may be replaced by three-dimensional methods in the near future, but the fundamentals of Björk's data will be at their core. The volume is elegantly produced in a 9x12.5 inches format with abundant illustrations. Herman S. Duterloo and Pierre-Georges Planché are orthodontists based, respectively, in The Netherlands and in France. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
