Expanded papers from a 2010 meeting highlight practical and theoretical research and cases on themes such as media access and the digital divide, the need for media literacy education, media ethics and social responsibility, and young people's participation in the public sphere through digital communication. The international contributors are professors of communication studies, education, media studies, film, and theater, as well as decision makers and regulators. Several are affiliated with the International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth, and Media, of the University of Gothenburg's Nordic Information Center for Media and Communication Research in Sweden. The book offers a conceptual framework of eight principles for change in children's TV, drawn from interviews with media producers around the world. Other topics addressed include 'tween girls' sexuality and a media scandal in Hong Kong, youth as media producers and creators of the online culture, and youth interaction via radio and cell phones in southeast Turkey. B&w photos are included. There is no subject index. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
