NCTE
A master class in children's literature; trends and issues in an evolving field.
For teachers and librarians, Bedford (education and human development, U. of New Orleans) and Albright (literacy, Texas Woman's U.) collect 12 essays by educators who participated in annual Master Classes in Teaching Children's Literature (which began in 1994) sponsored by the Children's Literature Assembly during various years of the Annual Convention of the National Council of Teachers of English. They discuss trends and issues in teaching children's literature courses at the college level, including how to structure a course, current trends, and ways to encourage a variety of responses; types or aspects of books, such as illustration and design, math, gender diversity, and multicultural and international literature; and the impact of new technologies, censorship, bestselling books, and keeping the love of literature alive in the high-stakes testing environment.
